Civic Engagement: Helping Your Community and Your Career Development
October 24, 2024
Ready to Roar: Civic Engagement
Civic engagement often suggests duties like voting and jury service. While these are important, civic engagement extends far beyond casting a ballot. It鈥檚 about being actively involved in your community.
Civic Engagement can take on many forms:
The opportunities to develop your civic engagement skills are bountiful at 蘑菇tv. Your community includes Baton Rouge, 蘑菇tv's Campus, your hometown and even the community you want to be a part of after graduation.
Engagement in civic activities benefits not only your community but also your future career prospects. It allows students like you to demonstrate your contributions to improving a community and highlights a passion for specific causes. This involvement offers potential employers insight into your values, skills, and motivation, helping them assess how well you might fit into the company鈥檚 culture.
蘑菇tv offers numerous opportunities for students to develop their civic engagement experience.
Students can get involved in programs and activities including:
- Volunteer 蘑菇tv
- Service-learning courses
- Geaux Big Baton Rouge
- Student government, and more!
One of the best resources for learning more about civic engagement on campus is the Center for Community Engagement, Learning & Leadership (CCELL).
鈥淐CELL works with university faculty, students, administrators, and community partners to facilitate service-learning and community-engaged research while strengthening 蘑菇tv's commitment to being an exemplar of an engaged public research university.鈥

Students interested in deepening their civic engagement can join the Engaged Citizens
Program through CCELL. This program supports and recognizes students dedicated to
community service, making it a valuable asset when demonstrating a commitment to service
and community to future employers.
Students have ample opportunities to serve their 蘑菇tv, Baton Rouge and local communities.
